Launch of Canadian Tamil Women's Congress (CTWC)

On this International Women’s day, an organization called the Canadian Tamil Women’s Congress (CTWC) has launched to advocate for justice, equality and safety for all women. It will provide a forum for Tamil women to engage in dialogue and advocate for change. Furthermore, CTWC will be working to enhance knowledge and understanding of rights of women and facilitate projects to protect women’s rights.

Happy International Women's Day!

Today marks the 105th International Women’s Day. The idea of an international women’s day was first initiated by Clara Zetkin – Leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany at a conference in Copenhagen in 1910. It was first honoured on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in the form of rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

Thulirkal – Actor, Shelly Antony

Shelly Antony is a classically trained actor who recently received his MFA in Acting from the New School for Drama in NYC. His teachers included Tony Award winner Ron Leibman and he was honoured to participate in master classes with Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo. His stage work includes William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Much Ado about Nothing, and Craig Lucas’ Blue Window to name a few. He made his feature film debut as Aathi in Lenin M. Sivam’s A Gun & A Ring which travelled to many international film festivals including the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival. He recently wrapped up work on Matt Huntley’s film Reach where he played the role of Nick. He is represented in NYC by Renee Glicker of About Artists Agency and was honored by CTYA as a Youth Icon in 2014.

Professional Sports: A Dream in the Making

Growing up in a household full of males, sports has become a mutual source of entertainment for my family and I. We share a love for our home teams, whether it is the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Raptors, etc., the outcome of every game instigates a wave of emotions. Although true, a bold line is drawn there. The love for our country’s athletes remains as mere admiration. When the act of admiring transitions into the desire to follow, it becomes a problem. A child’s dream of becoming a professional athlete inevitably plants fear in the minds of Tamil parents, or a majority of immigrant parents for that matter. They immediately associate the profession with high risk, as a result becoming tangled in a huge web of uncertainty.
