Happy International Women’s Day!

Today marks the 105th International Women’s Day. The idea of an international women’s day was first initiated by Clara Zetkin – Leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany at a conference in Copenhagen in 1910. It was first honoured on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in the form of rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination i. Several years later, it is celebrated all over the world serving as a day to inspire women and celebrate their political, economic, and social achievements.

Each year, the United Nations has a theme for International Women’s Day. This year, the theme is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”. Share your thoughts on social media using the hashtag #MakeItHappen.

As we celebrate the amazing women around us, and the brave courageous women who have paved the way for the liberties women enjoy freely today, we must also accept our responsibility to further women’s rights. Women’s rights are human rights, and the rights we women have today came at harsh prices. Many women fought for these rights, and showed tremendous leadership and bravery in doing so. Like our grandmothers and mothers have done for us, we must do for generations that will succeed us. Men and women must both come together and become advocates and show solidarity in the struggles women face. As many of our sisters in Tamileelam suffer, we have a responsibility to work towards freeing them from oppression and violence. We must together, in unity work towards creating a solution for our sisters in Tamileelam.
