As we celebrate Canada 150, we reflect on our shared Canadian values. Paramount to our identity is the strength we draw from our varied cultural backgrounds. Through this event, the Arts & Culture Council of CTYA provides an opportunity for Tamil youth to display our rich Tamil heritage and culture.

Chronicles of a Tamil Freshman – Part 8

Thulirkal, Basement Reels Team

Basement Reels runs like a two person team, with support from everyone around us. I (Krusan) do most of the direction, cinematography and editing for Basement Reels, as well as creative writing. Tharshan is the creative brain who brings forth a lot of ideas, and of course is the main face/superstar actor of our team. Basement Reels was started as a way to get us to produce videos, practice, and get audience feedback. Late December 2014, Tharshan came to me with ideas for videos related to a Tamil/South Asian audience. He was passionate about writing and acting these ideas out, and I was passionate about producing videos, so our talents just meshed together nicely. Since then, we’ve found a working system to write great ideas together and produce them quickly while maintaining good quality.

Thornless Rose

The thornless rose
Lied in the field
Surrounded by those
Who became her shield

These lost souls
Came for this flower
But at large tolls
Lost their power

Singing Sensation, Roveena Gnanabakthan

This week we bring you Roveena Gnanabakthan – a Toronto based vocal powerhouse that captures you instantly. She first grabbed attention with her riveting cover of Etta James classic “At Last.” That made her a YouTube star and led to a CITY TV appearance that has launched a musical career destined for greatness. She studied classical piano and composition as an undergraduate at The University of Waterloo, but chose to pursue a career in human resources. Her love of music never diminished, however, and she began posting YouTube videos of performances of cover songs. That led to a genuinely life-changing moment when Toronto’s CITY TV invited Roveena to perform on their Breakfast Show. She was quickly invited to sing the national anthems at Blue Jays and NFL games, and a placing in the Top 10 on the singing competition show TVI’s Superstar boosted her profile in the South Asian community, both in Canada and internationally.
