Safety First!

With every report of a crime, we all are reminded to be a little more careful and cautious of our surroundings. University is an exciting time for students. Here are some safety tips for students on campus to help stay safe!

1. Always be aware of your surroundings and people around you.

2. Always travel with a buddy, especially late at night and in secluded parts of campus. If you ever feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to call Campus Security and have them escort you. It’s always good to let a buddy know where you are.

3. Be aware of where there are emergency “Campus Safety” phones and bars on campus. It is always good to have the number of your campus security number in your cell phone or somewhere easily accessible on you.

4. Travel in well-lit areas, and try to stay with the crowd when walking. Try to avoid shortcuts or alleyways that are scarcely populated.

5. When taking an elevator, stand near the control panel, where you have access to the alarm and floor buttons if you ever feel uncomfortable. If you are in an elevator alone with someone you feel uncomfortable with, let the person use the elevator first.

6. If you live on residence, ensure your doors are always locked.

7. When studying on campus, study with a buddy or in areas where there are lots of other students.

8. If threatened by an approaching vehicle, run in the opposite direction. The vehicle will have to turn around in order to pursue you.

9. Keep your electronics out of reach and sight.

10. When walking to your vehicle or residence, have your keys ready in hand.

Stay safe! 🙂
