WATERLOO TAMIL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

PRESS RELEASE  

July 10, 2010:

On July 10, 2010 at 2:30pm (at CIF gym) the Shots for Shelters fundraiser will kick off a day of fun filled activities. Sixteen teams will go into competition to see which team will ultimately be the winner. This is the first time that the Tamil Student Association will be conducting an event in collaboration with the Children Aid Rehabilitation and Education Program. This non-profit event will assist in developmental programs that provide children who have been affected by natural disasters, poverty, and war- with skills and education needed to allow them to lead independent lives. Due to the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, WATSA has committed to raising monetary fund’s that will potentially save thousands of lives in Sri Lanka. Proceeds of this event will specifically be donated to CREP to build orphanages for those children who have been internally displaced in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has confined nearly 300,000 – many being children, in more than 40 government camps in northern Sri Lanka. Armed guards surround the barbed wire camps, where families have been separated. Amnesty International has reports of detainees facing

The Waterloo University Tamil Student Association has organized a Shots for Shelters charity soccer fundraiser in order to be in assistance to the thousands of Tamils that have been displaced in Sri Lanka due to the civil war. WATSA finds itself in a position to help those in need, and what a better way to do so by acknowledging the soccer fever around the world and using it for the betterment of society. ” enforced disappearance, extrajudicial executions, torture and other ill-treatment, forced recruitment by paramilitary groups and sexual violence “.
