Fish Pedicures?

I heard about this new service is being offered in spas around the world, it’s a fish pedicure. Yes, you read it right, a FISH pedicure. Basically, this involves people willingly soaking their feet in a tank full of tiny Garra fish (also known as Doctor Fish) with the idea that these fish eat dead skin off one’s feet, and leave the healthy skin untouched, the end result, extremely soft feet. This service originated from Turkey, where the fish originate, and they have been known for their amazing healing powers for temporary relief of skin disorders.

Although some spas claim this service is safe, sanitary, and gives amazing results, not all critics are convinced. Because you cannot sanitize fish the same way other materials are sterilized in spas and doctor’s offices without hurting them, disease and bacteria can spread. If multiple people use the same fish, and say one of them has an infection, well, that can spread.

In Quebec, you can get this service done, but in Ontario, you can’t because it constitutes a health hazard under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. It’s also banned in some states in the US, but it is practiced in many other countries, including Turkey.

What do you think about this, would you be willing to soak your feet in a tank full of fish who would be nibbling away at your dead skin if it meant softer skin? Or does the idea of placing your feet in a tank of a 100 hungry fishes scare you?
