Shilip Somaya Gowda’s first novel, The Secret Daughter has gained widespread attention. The story takes place in a remote Indian village, where Kavita gives birth to a baby girl, Asha. However, in attempts to save her newborn from her family who favours sons, Kavitha makes a decision that haunts the rest of her adult life. In America, Somer, an American doctor who learns she is unable to have a child of her own decides to adopt a child with her husband Krishanan from a Mumbai orphanage.
