For Immediate Release
Friday, December 30, 2011

Dance, music, painting, and literature are forms of art that have existed for many years. The art of film however was introduced fairly recently to the world. Nonetheless, it has flourished, becoming a strong, well valued art form. The art of film has now become widespread, being watched and made internationally by a variety of cultures, religions and people.

The Tamil Diaspora has also been greatly involved with filmmaking. Many films, short films, documentaries and music videos have been produced by the Tamil community over the past years, serving as a means to express thoughts, educate and/or entertain others. With a large number of talented filmmakers in the Canadian Tamil community, it is vital for our community to recognize those talents and inspire our community to continue to move forward in the film industry. Canadian Tamil Film Festival (CTFF) was started in 2011 to serve as such a venue. This festival gives individual filmmakers an opportunity to screen their films to the public, and gain positive feedback so that they may continue to prosper.

The first annual CTFF was held in January 2011. Many submissions were made to the film festival, made by both Canadian and international Tamil filmmakers.

The second annual Canadian Tamil Film Festival (CTFF) will be held in Toronto, during June 2012.  CTFF is accepting short films, documentaries and music videos to be aired at this festival. By recognizing these filmmakers for their creation, CTFF encourages both experienced and upcoming filmmakers to gain experience for their dreams of the big screen, and to express their creativity and individuality.

“There are many youth in our community with interests in film arts. It was great to see many youth present at last year’s festival. CTFF will definitely be a stepping stone in identifying talented youth and encouraging them to express themselves” noted Sinthu Arul, an attendee at CTFF 2011.

CTFF is a project of Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance’s Arts and Culture council. The Arts and Culture council is responsible for creating an environment for youth that is inspiring and conducive of self-expression through the arts and culture.  Among its key objectives are the improvement, re-orientation and expansion of programs that promote the arts and Tamil culture to Canadian Tamil youth and the broader Canadian Community.

Those individuals who wish to take part in the Canadian Tamil Film Festival are invited to register at www.ctff.ca before March 24, 2012. Films will be accepted in two categories: Canadian films and global films. Submissions will be judged within their respective categories in the event that enough submissions are made to both categories. Films can be mailed or submitted in person to CTFF at Arivakam Canada by April 30, 2012. Videos must be minimum 3 minutes and maximum 30 minutes in length.
