“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children.”

“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace.” – Kofi Annan

After years of conflict, the North and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka has left behind many children who have lost their families. Many children have been abandoned, and made homeless. They are not receiving proper education, adequate shelter, food, clothing and medical care, which everyone has the right to be entitled to (Article 25, Universal Declaration of Human Rights).

As Tamil youth living in first world nations, we should not neglect children living in these unfortunate circumstances. Together as a united community we should take on the initiative to provide these children with proper guidance and education so they can grow up to become an asset to their community.

If as a collective, the Tamil youth of first world nations, joined to build orphanages in Tamil Eelam, it could eliminate the poverty faced by these children. Many of these infants have been traumatized because of the war that has occurred. Not only have they lost their families, but they lost all their essentials of life, such as shelter and food which not only affects them physically but mentally. Through the building of orphanages, these children will have a place to call home and people to call family. They can gain access to education, and be provided treatment for emotional damages that war has left upon them. An orphanage as such would provide positive change to these neglected children, and collectively as youth, we can work towards providing them this necessity.
