What Genocide? – Denial

What Genocide?

Although it’s hard to believe, some people deny genocide ever took place. There was a poll conducted in 1993 in America, and it found that 1 in 5 Americans (or 22%) answered ‘it is possible the Holocaust never happened.’ While you may think that these people are just being ignorant, it’s more than that; historians have actually spent time trying to prove that the Holocaust and other genocides in the world did not occur.

But you wonder, why deny genocide? Denying genocide is the final stage of genocide. I mean, if you are a nation state that carried our a program of genocide, why would you want there to be a record of it? And, if you acknowledge genocide happened, your reputation is lost, your credibility is lost, and the question of accountability and litigation arises. You all of a sudden can be punished for your crimes, and need to offer solutions to the survivors of genocide. You can protect the politicians who engaged in the systematic cleansing of a group by denying genocide ever took place. In fact, Turkey has denied the occurrence of the Armenian Genocide for 80 years. They even fund professors in America who support the idea that no genocide occur.

The Sinhalese government is also following in these footprints, they are denying that what occurred was genocide, and they instead are naming it a ‘Humanitarian Operation.’ Where was the humanity in the bloods of our brothers, in the cries of our sisters? History must write down that the Tamils in Sri-Lanka were killed, raped and injured by the Sri-Lankan government. History must record that this genocide was conducted in broad daylight, with all the international governments watching, but not acting. History must record that Tamils all over the world united and spoke up against the atrocities and pleaded with the Western governments to intervene.

By speaking out against denial theories, and making it known to common people that genocide did occur, we can combat the final genocide of our people.
