Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program: Public Speaking

This is a program some of you may be interested in, here is a short summary of the program:

A fairly popular program for Teens is coming back to the Lillian Smith Branch, the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program.  The program helps young people develop the communication and leadership skills they need to be successful adults.  It runs over 8 weeks on Saturday mornings at 10am, starting October 2nd.  It is co-sponsed by the Toronto Public Library and District 60 of Toastmasters International

 On the Toastmasters website it lists, the 10 biggest public speaking mistakes.   They are:

  • Starting with a whimper.
  • Attempting to imitate other speakers.
  • Failing to “work” the room.
  • Failing to use relaxation techniques.
  • Reading a speech word for word.
  • Using someone else’s stories.
  • Speaking without passion.
  • Ending a speech with questions and answers.
  • Failing to prepare.
  • Failing to recognize that speaking is an acquired skill.

 So if you’re between the ages of 12-17, this program will help you perfect the art of public speaking.  There is limited spots, so please register in person at the 2nd floor Information desk or by calling 416-393-7746.
