“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture
is like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey
To the artists and performers participating in the Ultimate Gaana Competition (organized by the Arts and Cultural Council of CTYA):
On behalf of the Parliamentary Caucus of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Leader Justin Trudeau, I am deeply honoured and pleased to add my name to the list of those extending best wishes as you compete and showcase your personal talents and skills through this up-beat and invigorating genre of music.
The communities of York West are home to a talented group of people, hailing from a rich diversity of cultures, linguistic backgrounds and, perhaps most expressive of all, from a wide range of musical and artistic passions. The Ultimate Gaana Competition demonstrates this in ways that celebrate and honour your roots while highlighting the tremendous strength, flavour and resilience of Tamil cultural traditions within Canada’s national mosaic. By showcasing your rich and accomplished artistic and cultural heritage, you provide all Canadians with an opportunity to witness the beauty and complexity of an ancient culture that now finds a home here in Canada.
Today as you come together to celebrate, please know there are those of us in the Liberal Caucus who stand with you. May you continue to enjoy success and happiness in the years ahead and may the positive traditions of your ancestors be a legacy for your children.
Sincerely,
Hon. Judy A. Sgro, Privy
