The Arts and Culture Council of the Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance (CTYA) held its first annual inter-university/college dance competition “Thaalam” together with the Tamil Students Associations (TSA) from various colleges and universities in Canada. This was held on June 19, 2011 at the prestigious John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Center. It was a widely attended event, by youth, parents and community members alike.
The dance teams and TSAs through the Arts and Culture Council sought to allocate the funds generated from “Thaalam” towards initiating a youth recreation center in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). We are proud to announce that we are allocating $10, 000 from the Thaalam funds towards initiating the development of this youth recreation center. We thank all those who supported and attended the event.
Over the years, the Tamil community has been contributing economically, socially and culturally to the greater Canadian society. As an aspiring community, the Tamil youth need a place to come together and practice their traditions and values and preserve their identity. Therefore the members of CTYA feel that a recreation centre for the youth is necessary, and are proud to initiate the first step towards a youth recreation center through “Thaalam”.
Although we have initiated this project, this is a community project, and the full support and commitment of all community members is necessary in order for it to flourish.
