I would like to extend my support to the Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance (CTYA) and their valued work. CTYA is a non-profit organization that includes many Tamil youth clubs in the GTA and across Canada, creating opportunities and events for Tamil youth so that they may realize their life’s potential and contribute to all that Canada has to offer.

Indeed, Tamil literature has a rich history that dates back to the fifth century, when the five great epics of Tamil literature started to emerge. Silappadikaram Manimegalai, Civaka Cinamani, Valayapathi, and Kundalakesi, are famous stories our parents may have read growing up, stories that are fundamental to our culture in the way they’re still being printed and translated to this day.

The Arts and Culture Council of CTYA is holding a photography contest as part of the many activities being held throughout January for Tamil Heritage Month. The Arts and Culture Council is now accepting photographs that capture and reveal Tamil cultural events and/or festivities. Through this contest, the Council encourages youth to take pride in their roots and share their rich heritage with the members of the Canadian community.

The song of Kaniyan Punkunran

The song of Kaniyan Punkunran is a famous and widely known Tamil poem, it’s first lines, “Yaavum Oore Yavarum Kelir” is one widely recognized by Tamils. This poem originates from the ‘Pura naanooru’, a classical work of Tamil literature that speaks of life outside the home, particularly with Kingship, War, Ethics and Statenesmanship. It has been translated in English, and now appears in many poetry anthologies, and can resonate with a variety of people.
