Some food for thought: The Original ‘Kari’ (Not Curry)

You know some words you say in Tamil are so different in English, like, scotch tape becomes ‘sello tape’, but what about the other way around, have you ever thought about which Tamil words have become English words? Well, ‘kari’ is one of them. When the Portugesuse arrived in South Asia, they adapted the word ‘kari’ to ‘karil’ and this word is apparently still used in Goa. (I asked a Goan friend of mine, and they said they use it). And later, the British adapted this word further, to curry. From there, was the beginning of curry.

So what kari/curry do you like the most?
