Press Release – International Women’s Day

March 8, 2011

Today is International Women’s Day, and the Human Rights Advocacy Council of Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance (CTYA) would like to show solidarity to this important day. Women have contributed tremendously to society, and celebrating their achievements is vital in nurturing and inspiring future achievements.

International Women’s Day was first observed on March 19th 1911. Millions of people attended the first celebration in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland to campaign for women’s rights to work, vote, hold office in the government and put an end to discrimination. This year, 2011, will marks the centenary year for this event. For 100 years, many people, businesses and governments have continued to show their support for International Women’s Day. Every year, on March 8th, many countries throughout the world hold several events to empower women and celebrate their achievements.

The website for the International Women’s Day is www.internationalwomensday.com. Local events happening in various countries are all listed here.

Seeing that there was a need to create an conductive environment for Tamil women’s involvement in sports, CTYA’s Athletics Council recently initiated Step Up: Dream. Commit. Succeed., Step Up is an event occurring this month, which provides an avenue for Canadian Tamil Women to participate and develop their skills in various sports.

The Human Rights Advocacy Council aims to build the capacity of Canadian Tamil youth by equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to advocate for the protection of human rights in Canada and abroad. We invite you to take the time today to celebrate the development of women’s rights and the significant achievements of women.  “Make everyday International Women’s Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.”
