May 21, the End of World? It’s Never Too Late.

Written by: Gayathri R.

I’m generally not one to believe in superstitions, so the claim that today (May.21) is “Judgment day” and that the world will end in the “Greatest Earthquake Ever” was not one I truly believed. This isn’t the first time a group prophesized the world was ending on a particular day. Remember Y2K? Or the end of the Mayan calendar? Maybe we just have wait until next year for 2012?

While the actual date the world is going to end has not been an issue for me, there is one thing this whole world ending frenzy has made me do. Reflect. It has made me reflect on the life I am living right now. If someone happened tomorrow, would I be in peace? Have I lead a good life? Have I made others happy? Am I holding on to unnecessary grudges? Do I appreciate the good things and good people in my life? Have I made a difference to the world?

Even if you, like me, are not one to believe in claims of the world ending, these events might actually help us stop and reflect on the life we are living. We don’t need to wait until New Years to make resolutions (of which we hardly keep) we can make them any day in the year. It’s never too late to apologize to an old friend and break off a grudge, it’s never too late to start helping and making a positive difference in the world, it’s never too late to let the people in your life know that they mean a lot to you. Because, it may not be too late now, but who knows, maybe one day it will be. Look at the life you’ve lead up until now, are you proud of it? How can you be a better person? How? Find out, and make the changes that will make you a better friend, sister, brother, or citizen.
