I am

Written By: Thulasi Jothiravi of Ottawa, Grade 6

I am a Tamil civilian.
I am scared and unequal.
I wonder why this is happening to us.
I hear the cries of injured, innocent civilians.
I see dead bodies scattered on the ground.
I want life to be easier.

I am a Tamil civilian.
I am scared and unequal.
I pretend to be silent while we past the Sri Lankan
army.
I feel this island separating in half.
I touch the tears of my scared siblings.
I worry about how we might not survive.
I cry when I think about the future.

I am a Tamil civilian.
I am scared and unequal.
I understand that we, Tamils are the target in this
war.
I say to myself often, “What have we done wrong?”
I dream about us running from village to village
every night.
I try to keep my family safe.
I hope the war will end one day.

I am a Tamil civilian.
I am scared and unequal.
