Channel 4’s powerful documentary, Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields which depicts evidence of war crimes allegations in Sri Lanka has been nominated for a BAFTA (British Academy of Films and Television Arts) Award under the Current Affairs category. It is competing against Al Jazeera’s Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark, BBC1’s The Truth About Adoption – Panorama, and Undercover Care – The Abuse Exposed.
An online poll is currently being conducted by Radio Times, a U.K. weekly television and radio programme owned by BBC to see public opinion as to the best nominee but the final winner of this award will be chosen by the BAFTA jury.
Currently, the vote is going very close between Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark and Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields. In the past 24 hours, there has been a drastic amount of votes that have been cast for Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields. A strong showing in public opinion will show that the international community is concerned about justice in Sri Lanka and that there is strong support for investigating war crimes committed.
Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields director Callum Macrae stated “It’s extraordinary how this Radio Times poll has turned into nothing less than an international pro-democracy campaign. What is very important, though, is that people are clear that to vote for the Sri Lankan film is a vote for democracy and justice in Sri Lanka.”
