The Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance held its first ever Top Talents Awards Gala and Dinner last Friday, June 18. Top Talents was created to recognize and celebrate the achievements of Tamil youth aged 17-30 by recognizing and rewarding talented youth among the community with an award and a $500 bursary. Its aim was to motivate youth to achieve greater success by recognizing and rewarding those youth who have contributed to society and are positive role models for their peers.
Today we will look at the profile of the winner of the CTYA Top Talents Tamil Language Award, Ms. Saibruntha Arunthavashanmuganathan.
The Top Talents Classical Music Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding ability, achievement and leadership in Classical Music. Decisions are made based on the applicant’s video performance, personal statement and references (if submitted) by a panel of judges. The selection panel is interested in the nominee’s overall success, leadership qualities, determination, performance, and commitment to success.
Saibruntha is an exceptional carnatic musician and singer who has mesmerized crowds in high caliber concerts not only in Canada, but also in South India. Any individual, who has heard her sing, could not have not noticed her amazing voice. She had the privilege and the honor of learning under her guru Smt. Geetha Rajasekar, a disciple of the legendary D K Pattamal. Her talents have been recognized and praised by honourable and leading singers including TV Shankaranarayanan, Unnikrishnan, and Maharajapuram Srinivasa. She has completed her Vocal Arangetram in 2005 amongst the presence of great musicians and vidwans at York University Burton Auditorium, where TV Shankaranarayanan was the Chief Guest.
In addition to vocal music, she practices violin and dance. She also has shown commitment and dedication towards developing the art of classical music through her role as director and teacher of Madhura Geetham School of Music, where she has taught music to 35 students over the past 5 years. Not only has she reached out to Tamil students through her music, but she has introduced this divine art form to interested students from various communities.
Not only is she a gifted individual, she has used her talent in classical music towards the betterment of society; she has performed concerts raising money for disabled children in Tamil Eelam and Canada through Olimayam. Olimayam has also presented her of the title of “Isai Perolli.”
She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Arts at York University, majoring in Kinesiology. Her commitment, hard work and determination in the pursuit of her artistic talents make her a well-deserving recipient of CTYA’ Classical Music Award.

When she hears a car engine crank, she can pick up that sound and translate it into a note and start singing from there on. Such is her ability.
