TEEM: Empowering the leaders of tomorrow!

The Education and Empowerment Mission (TEEM) of CTYA aims to bridge the gap by bringing experienced youth leaders to teach emerging leaders the skills and tools required to become a successful youth leader.

On Sunday November 18, 2012, CTYA hosted its first TEEM workshop as part of its leadership workshop series. This workshop was supported by the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA) and Maytree Foundation.

Volunteers from Maytree Foundation, Andre Vashist and Jorge Kanesh taught the youth about the various forms of government as well as the decision making process within the municipal government. In addition, participants also had the opportunity to gain insight on how they can make an impact on decision making in the municipal level through deputations. With the upcoming release of the Toronto City Budget, this workshop provided youth with the knowledge and encouragement they needed to be inspired to make a difference.

Furthermore, President of Ontario New Democrats Party and Executive Director of CASSA, Neethan Shan, introduced participants to the various leadership styles exhibited by individuals. The youth identified important personality traits of leaders and acknowledged which traits they would like to improve on to become effective leaders.

The next workshop will be Sunday December 16, 2012. This month’s topic is Team Building. Workshops will take place once a month for $20 per person, per workshop.
