Professional Sports: A Dream in the Making

Professional Sports: A Dream in the Making

Growing up in a household full of males, sports has become a mutual source of entertainment for my family and I. We share a love for our home teams, whether it is the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Raptors, etc., the outcome of every game instigates a wave of emotions. Although true, a bold line is drawn there. The love for our country’s athletes remains as mere admiration. When the act of admiring transitions into the desire to follow, it becomes a problem. A child’s dream of becoming a professional athlete inevitably plants fear in the minds of Tamil parents, or a majority of immigrant parents for that matter. They immediately associate the profession with high risk, as a result becoming tangled in a huge web of uncertainty.

Thangachi’s Corner: What is your background?

Thangachi's Corner: What is your background?

Where am I from?

That’s the question I posed my grade four’s last week when one of the girls walked in at the beginning of the period, readily prepared to burst into tears.

And it’s certainly a problematic question, isn’t it? After all, by “from”, I could be referring to the geographical location from which I arrived to Canada. Or perhaps I mean the country from which my parents immigrated here. It’s an altogether tricky question, especially when taking into consideration a rather diverse community made up of various cultures, languages and religious beliefs.

Chronicles of a Tamil Freshman – Part 4

Being an Arts and Science Major, Tanya was enrolled in a wide variety of courses—Writing and Informal Logic, Calculus, Climate Change & Global Warming, and Biological Processes were a few on her course list this term. Breathing heavily, Tanya ran down the corridor of GBS (George Benjamin Science Building), and found room 145. She looked down at her phone, and saw that it was now 8:37 am. “Great, I’m late to my first class on my first day of University. There’s only like five billion people in there. What a way to be remembered,” Tanya sighed.

Tanya slowly opened the lecture hall door, and prayed that her professor wouldn’t make a scene. She tip-toed up the staircase in the center of the hall, and scanned the room for an empty seat. She didn’t make it very far, before she began attracting everyone’s attention.

“Welcome to your first lecture in Writing and Informal Logic, otherwise known as ENGLISH 1Q03. Today we will be cov—”, the professor paused mid-way as he began his lecture. Tanya slowly turned around, and was met by his fuming expression.

Thulirkal - Fashion Trendsetter, Kishanth Raveendran!

Since I was a kid, I was always interested in fashion. Of course, it was hard not to be while growing up in Paris, France, which is known as the capital of fashion. I had adopted a very European style that portrayed classy and elegance, however when I moved to Canada, I felt insecure to continue dressing this way, as it did not seem to be the look here. So, I started following the trends of that time, and dressed myself with an urban, hip hop style (oversized clothing, bandanas galore, timberlands, etc.). But as time went by, I felt I was being unrealistic and decided to bring back my European style, where I felt more comfortable and happy.

Thulirkal - Giving Back To Jaffna Through Her Photography, Jananie Baskaran!

Palm Roots is a charity-based auction, which I initiated in 2013 to raise funds for children in Jaffna. As clichéd as it sounds, my first visit to Jaffna in 2013 changed my perspective about my life here in Canada. Even though I’ve visited other parts of Sri Lanka regularly, it was my first visit to a place we call our ‘home town.’ Until then, everything I had heard about Jaffna was based on media, books and knowledge that my Dad shared with me. But seeing the consequences people faced due to the war in Jaffna and realizing that we take things such as education, our basic needs such as food and shelter for granted urged me to give back to my community and help those who weren’t able to afford these necessities.

Chronicles of a Tamil Freshman - Part 2

“Damn it,” she thought. She knew she had a habit of doing clumsy things, and being given the top bunk would just add fuel to the fire. “What if I roll over one night, and fall flat on my face? Or, what if I gain so much weight that I break the bed and crush Eliza?” She began to imagine an obese version of herself, dressed in black, attending Eliza’s funeral. She pictured her tombstone reading: “Crushed to death by fat Tamil”.

Trying not to think about it, she began unpacking her luggage, and found the container of her mother’s infamous chicken biryani. “I’ll save this baby for tonight,” she thought. She put away her clothes and supplies in her assigned dresser, and organized her binders and notebooks for the first day of classes tomorrow. “I think that’s it,” Tanya thought to herself. She began digging through the rest of her luggage to see if she’d forgotten anything. She felt something underneath one of the folds, and pulled out a few packets of Fair and Lovely. “Jeez, thanks Amma,” Tanya muttered, as she threw the packets into the garbage bin underneath her desk.
