The battle to crown the new Tamileelam Challenge Cup Champion is fast arriving as the Athletics Council of CTYA will be hosting the 2015 Volleyball Tamil Eelam Challenge Cup. The tournament is open to everyone and we are having a call out of teams from 6 to 10 players. To register a team, please email: athletics@ctya.org or contact 416.428.8467. The last day to register is Sunday, April 19th 2015.

Thulirkal: Rising Star Kokilan Maheswaran!

Kokilan Maheswaran strives to inspire a generation of others who share the same goals and desires that he has for the culture of cinema, acting, and artistry. He wants to be an inspiration to such youth so that in the future, the Tamil community could welcome the acting field more openly. He has completed several modeling shoots, a few music videos, and 2 feature films. His latest venture is “The Numb” illustrates the repercussions of drug abuse. This film was directed by Priyanthan Sathasivam, and is slated for a 2013 release.

Sri Lankan military presence must be removed in the Tamil populated areas

While this disturbance may be the latest act committed by the Sri Lankan military forces against the Tamil population, it illustrates the need for the Canadian government, international community and the United Nations to seriously consider the conditions faced by the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. CTYA along with its members urge the democratic establishments around the world to immediately demand Sri Lankan government to remove military presence in the Tamil populated areas of North and East of the island.

At CTYA, we are excited to announce the start of Robotic classes for this winter. The Robotics competition was a big success as an event. To build on that success, we are introducing classes that will be more focused on math and science as used in robotics – in a classroom setting.

A 16-year old Tamil youth, Maneesa Sotheeswaran, has been working with “Because I am a Girl” Campaign to empower and advocate for girls. Because I am a Girl is a global campaign that seeks to empower women in the developing world and help secure brighter futures for girls and women.

Tamil basketball star Shajan Navaratnarajah has achieved what few, if not any, Tamil Canadians have ever done for Canadian university basketball. As the first Tamil basketball athlete for Ryerson University Rams, he has helped Ryerson Rams achieve a final four berth in the OUA (Ontario University Association) championships, The Wilson Cup.

9.50 Film highlights key issues Tamil youth face

Gangs, the allure of easy money, domestic abuse, culture shock; these are some of the issues explored in the film 9 Dollars and 50 Cents, which depicts the journey of two Tamil youth in Scarborough as they grapple with a series of events over period of 24 hours. The film is going to be screened at the Scarborough Town Centre Cineplex Coliseum on Saturday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m., and film director Rangith Joeseph said the movie unveils problems that are having a detrimental affect on both the Tamil and greater community
