Yet another promise of "Never Again"

KIGALI, RWANDA–France made serious errors of judgment over the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and wants to ensure all those responsible for the slaughter are caught and punished, President Nicolas Sarkozy said Thursday.

Sarkozy was visiting his counterpart, President Paul Kagame, in the central African country to cement improved diplomatic relations following years of acrimony, recriminations and diplomatic standoffs over events surrounding the genocide.

Weather News: Messy Morning Commute Across the GTA

Roads are slick in the Greater Toronto Area. Give yourself PLENTY of extra time this morning. Light snow is still falling in and around the shores of Lake Ontario this morning. There aren’t HEAVY amounts of snow on the ground, but there’s enough to make for some slippery roads.

Several accidents have already been reported on major streets and series 400 Highways. And with the bulk of the morning commute still to come, police are expecting more. Still, it’s not just the snow on the ground drivers need to look out for. Today, the winds will be a bigger story.

Girl Power! Canadian women beat U.S. for hockey gold

There’s no denying that Canadian women are talented, look no further than our hockey team who has done it yet again. I’m not too much of a sports fan, but it’s hard not to look at the ladies representing Canada at the hockey tournaments. Even if less rink time may be given to girls in Toronto, we take the cake. Go team Canada!

Canada's day of Olympic medal glory unleashes a swell of national pride

VANCOUVER — Four more medals, a record-tying gold-medal haul and — perhaps most importantly for Canadians — a win over Russia in hockey has made Wednesday the most successful day for the host country at the 2010 Games.

Canada has caught up to the United States and Germany for the most gold medals at these Olympics with seven after the Canada-1 sled piloted by Calgary’s Kaillie Humpheries slid into first in women’s bobsled at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Team Canada lays a 7-3 whupping on top-ranked Russia

VANCOUVER — It wasn’t the gold-medal game . . . it just felt like it.
Thirty million Canadians will say they were there. And maybe they were — in the hearts of 20 Canadian players who felt their push.

The best of Canadian hockey was on display in this victory for the ages: Passion. Heart. Hunger. Will.

The Canadians came at Russia like a Tsunami.

“We were at the boiling point as soon as the puck dropped,” said Canadian forward Eric Staal. As for the top-ranked Russians, they didn’t even come to a simmer, as Canada hung one of the most embarrassing defeats on Russia in its Olympic history. Officially, the 7-3 rout is Russia’s second worst Olympic loss — behind a 5-0 beating by Finland in 1994.

City to pay $420M over 30 years to rent streetlights

After selling its streetlights to Toronto Hydro in 2005 to raise $60 million, the City of Toronto will pay more than $420 million over the next 30 years to rent the lights back, the contract agreement shows.

The controversial contract was obtained by the Greater Toronto Electrical Contractors Association through a freedom of information request — which the city strongly opposed.

Student's software design wins award

Remember those collages we had to make in elementary school? Well, there’s a better way now.

What looks like the simplest idea is often the easiest to sell. “I think the magic with basically anything in the tech sector is to hide the complexity as much as you can,” said Vincent Cheung, owner of Shape Collage Inc., a software program that arranges hundreds of photos into custom shapes in seconds.
