Do you want to tell your Facebook friends that you are eating at that fabulous new restaurant in town? Well, now you can. But maybe you should think twice.

In yet another red flag on the Facebook privacy front, privacy advocates have raised concerns over the giant social network’s latest product, Places, which has been released in the U.S. and may be available in Canada as early as September.

Smallest, Faintest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight

It’s true, the moon may be shrinking. But that’s not why tonight’s full moon will be the smallest and faintest of the entire year. At 2:00 a.m. ET on August 25, the moon will be at apogee, the farthest it will get from Earth as the natural satellite travels in its egg-shaped orbit around our planet. At its closest, the moon is said to be at perigee.

A Visit to the Motherland

Written by: Archana Lingendran (Ryerson University, Bachelors of Social Work)

For my international placement I went to Ghana, which is located on the west coast of Africa. During my stay, I worked for a non-profit organization called the Sankofa Center for African Dance and Culture (S.C.A.D.C). “Sankofa” is an ancient African proverb characterized by a bird looking back on its past. It asks people to revisit their past in order to correct the mistakes that may affect their future. The organizations objective is to teach preventative education to the rural and urban population about HIV/AIDS through traditional African dance, music, and theatre.

Stripped of Honour

Stripped of Honour

We were home alone – my mother and I. My father had died a couple of years ago and we had lost most of our relatives in the continuous shelling and bombing in this twenty-five year old war. Others had flown abroad in search of safer lives. Now it was just us – scared to step outside our home and afraid to walk on our land. So we sat inside on the cold floor, looking at each other, not knowing what to say or do. Everyday was the same. But, today…there was a loud knock on the door…

61 schoolgirls killed, 129 wounded in airstrike

At least 61 schoolgirls were killed and 129 were wounded when Sri Lankan Kfir jets bombed a children’s home compound in Mullaithivu district Monday morning where schoolgirls were attending a residential course on first aid, LTTE officials at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi said. Ambulances were rushing the wounded, many of whom are bleeding badly, to hospitals, sources said. Officials of the LTTE, briefing reporters in Kilinochchi, described the attack as “a horrible act of terror” by the Sri Lankan armed forces. UN’s child agency, UNICEF, and international truce monitors have visited the scene of the carnage.

Tamil migrants must be treated fairly

“Each person arriving to Canada must be treated equally under the law, according to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act,” said New Democrat Immigration and Citizenship critic Olivia Chow.

“If the Tamils arriving are genuine refugees, allow them to stay and process them quickly and fairly. If they are not refugees, send them home” said Chow. “The key is to examine each individual’s situation and not to jump to conclusions without all the facts.”

How we should deal with the Tamil boat people

How we should deal with the Tamil boat people

Another boatload of Tamil refugees is expected in Canada later this week. Its imminent arrival has raised important questions about how we should deal with boats that might arrive in the future.

Should Canada adopt a policy similar to Australia and turn the boats away before they enter Canadian waters? This is not a viable option for Canada as it would be a violation of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms and of our obligations under international law. In 1997, The Inter-American Court of Human Rights determined unequivocally that such conduct would be contrary to Canada’s international obligations. Simply put, to summarily turn away refugees without determining the validity of their fear of persecution and without regard to their fate is illegal and unthinkable.
