One of the rights we have are, democratic rights, which includes the right to vote. With all these rights and privileges, we also have an important responsibility. Cancer is an illness that has impacted every individual either directly or indirectly in some way. We have known people who have fought against cancer, and also those who were unable to beat this deadly disease. The Canadian Cancer Society has been holding a campaign throughout April to encourage Canadians to wear a daffodil pin to show their support for those who are fighting against cancer, those who have survived and to remember those have lost their lives. April 27th is Daffodil Day.

Thaalam Funds to Initiate Youth Recreation Centre

Over the years, the Tamil community has been contributing economically, socially and culturally to the greater Canadian society. As an aspiring community, the Tamil youth need a place to come together and practice their traditions and values and preserve their identity. Therefore the members of CTYA feel that a recreation centre for the youth is necessary, and are proud to initiate the first step towards a community center through “Thaalam”.

Conservative Party Ad - Refugees as "Criminals"?

In a recent ad released by the Conservative Party of Canada, the Conservatives makes reference to the boatload of Tamil refugees who made their way to Canada last year, fleeing persecution in Sri-Lanka. The message being sent through this ad is that refugee claimants are “criminals.” The migrants who were on this ship that was featured in this ad were travelling at sea for three months, living in cramped and inadequate living conditions. They put their lives at risk to embark on this risky journey to a safer place after suffering tremendously through the hardships in Sri Lanka.

On Thursday March 24th a precious life was lost. As Karthiha was on her way home from the library only two minutes away from her home, she was struck by a car while crossing the intersection at Sheppard Avenue at Murison Boulevard, near Neilson Road. On behalf of CTYA, we send out deepest condolences to the family and friends of Karthiha.

The final of the three Step-Up sessions is quickly approaching. Step-Up is an initiative taken upon the Athletic Council to provide an avenue for Canadian Tamil Women to participate and develop their skills in various sports. The next session (Volleyball) will take place on Saturday March 26th 2011.
