This September, a lot of high school students will be attending post secondary schools. Most will move out of their homes to stay in dorms, and private housing. Therefore the safety of students living away from home is more prevalent now especially with the media coverage of the murder of Chinese visa student Qian Liu. On April 15, Qian was brutally attacked and murdered in her basement apartment.

The month of May marks the second year remembrance of the Tamil genocide carried out by the Sri-Lankan Government. During this time in 2009, genocidal acts by Sri Lankan government escalated, leaving 40,000 killed according to UN and over 120,000 killed according to the local sources.

G for Genocide Campaign. To Educate, To Commemorate: The Tamil Genocide

TYO-Canada successfully carried out an awareness campaign, G for Genocide this past week as part of educating and commemorating the second anniversary of the Sri-Lankan Government’s mass killing of Tamils. The campaign took place at various locations in the Toronto Downtown core where youth aimed to educate fellow Torontonians of the Tamil Genocide as part of May Month Remembrance. A petition to the International Criminal Court urging an investigation was also circulated, and signatures were obtained.

Mobile Artist Community & EMI Music Competition – Tamil Youth Contestant, Tha Prophecy

Canadian Tamil youth, Rajeev Sathiyaseelan “Tha Prophecy” is taking part in a mobile competition run by MOA and EMI Music which seeks to discover and promote new music and emerging artists. The Winner will have their single released on a compilation, purchasable exclusively on HMVDigital, serviced to radio stations all over the country.

The timeline will highlight incidents that occured during the time period of December 2008- May 2009. Nimal Subramanian, Google Science Fair 2011 Contestant

Nimal Subramanian, an 8th grade student from California, son of scientist originally from rural Madurai, has been selected as one of the top 60 contestants for Google Science Fair 2011 Award. Now, among these 60 contestants, the winner is selected by popular vote. It is very encouraging to see Nimal Subramanian, a Tamil youth reaching this level. A Tamil youth elected to Canadian Parliament

Rathika Sitsabaiesan, a 29-year old Tamil youth was elected to Canadian Federal Parliament as a Member of Parliament this past Monday. Her achievement marks the first female and Tamil member who has been elected to Canadian Federal Government.
