Popular Mechanics At Work!

Written By: Ramanaa Srikandarajah, Director – Education and Career Development Council of Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance

The Education and Career Development Council of Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance began its popular Robotics Workshops this winter. The Robotics Workshops itself focuses on math and science as used in robotics, and provide students with the opportunity to continue to build on their knowledge of robotics through various workshops, and field trips.

In order to inspire the students and help them gain exposure to the “real life” of engineering and robotics, program coordinators took 20 students on a trip to a Toyota Plant in Cambridge, ON. Through this trip, students saw firsthand cars being assembled and the robotics devices used in the assembly process, including a 1.5 storey Robot that moved cars onto the assembly line. One student expressed, “It was cool to see how cars were made. I had no idea of all the work that went into it.”

Many students expressed awe at seeing such live mechanics at work. Another student said, “It was awesome! I learned about robots – especially industrial robots.” It was a great learning opportunity for the students, one student commented about the trip, “I learned there are many parts to a robot and each piece plays an important role.” It was a rare opportunity to see such mechanics at work.

Current and former Engineering students from the Canadian Universities with relevant field applications designed the course curriculum for the Robotics Program. The hands-on and theory based course along with field trip makes this a unique program. This opportunity provides students with the necessary foundational knowledge and skills in engineering and robotics.

Robotics Programs are part of the “Recreation and Innovation Center for Tamil Youth.”
