In the heart of the urban city of Toronto, lies the hidden community of Kensington Market. Its boundaries extend from Spadina to Bathurst, and College to Dundas. Founded by the Denison family, it has now become home to 2,456, 805 people, and consisting of a large immigrant population. Having spent some time in the cafes in Kensington, I was introduced to a community event: Pedestrian Sundays. Apparently, once a month, cars are banned on Sundays. Pedestrians are free to walk around, mingle, and take part in the events that occur. I thought that with all the pedestrian accidents we have been hearing of, this is interesting concept. Maybe we should close down major intersections once in awhile, and let the community get together for games, events, and just mingle? The people look so relaxed, calm and happy. (But, the headache that that may cause may elevate stress levels) Maybe this may work in a small community like Kensington, but I doubt it can work in a busy intersection. But, nonetheless, it’s an interesting concept, a little bit of village-atmosphere in a urban city, nothing something you come across every day.
