On Friday January 29th 2010 5:30 pm at Canada Kanthasamy Kovil, the Tamil community came together to pay respects to Muthukumar Anna and 19 Martyrs who lit themselves to show their love for Eelam Tamils and how they would do anything to get the cause out there. As I sat there I looked at the faces that lost their lives on the poster and that made me wonder, how much pain they must have gone through, the fact of burning yourself itself gives me the shivers. We usually say that we will do anything for Eelam but my question is will we ever give up our lives? No one ever thinks about these things, till someone does it. When Muthukumar Anna did it, he was not a single man, he was just like us he had a family. Hearing those voices cry and say how he was a potential person, however he was an unselfish soul that wanted to help his brothers and sisters. Before he passed away he wrote a four page note, and what he mostly wrote on that was about the youth, how the youth should come together and act as one. Following his death, 19 martyrs sacrificed their lives as well.
When our international community did not come for us, as a Tamilan and a journalist he gave up his life, and that makes my heart beat faster and burn. The fires that burned on him were not ordinary flames they were the tears and blood that our people have shed in the past, in the present and hopefully no more. He wanted the world to know that no one was living in peace there, that the media should open its eyes from this kind of death. Today we pay respect for these individuals but in order for them to rest in peace we must fight for our Eelam Tamils. Together we should stay in unity and remember every one who lost their lives in order for us to have peace. Muthukumar Anna and the other 19 individuals will not be forgotten, they are the ones who will motivate us to keep running and reach towards our freedom. Tamilar Thagam Thamileela Thayagam.
