Tamil youth, Maneesa Sotheeswaran works to empower girls

Tamil youth have been actively involved in shaping their communities for the better. A 16-year old Tamil youth, Maneesa Sotheeswaran, has been working with “Because I am a Girl” Campaign to empower and advocate for girls. Because I am a Girl is a global campaign that seeks to empower women in the developing world and help secure brighter futures for girls and women.

The power of change a girl can bring to her community is summed up by Because I am a Girl, “When a girl is educated, nourished and protected, she shares her knowledge and skills with her family and community, and can forever change the future of a nation. It’s that powerful.”

Maneesa is quoted in Metro Newspaper, “I want equity and equality within the world and I want to be a little part of the movement to change that”. Maneesa has been part of the Campaign Speaker’s Bureau where she has been trained to speak and advocate for women. Despite being 16, she had taken leadership and has participated and spoken at many events and conferences as a youth delegate. Today, Maneesa continues to advocate for women’s rights through interviews and at other events.

Tamil youth like Maneesa are inspirational and contribute greatly to the betterment of society in Canada and abroad.

Happy International Women’s Day!
