TYO-Canada successfully carried out an awareness campaign, G for Genocide this past week as part of educating and commemorating the second anniversary of the Sri-Lankan Government’s mass killing of Tamils. The campaign took place at various locations in the Toronto Downtown core where youth aimed to educate fellow Torontonians of the Tamil Genocide as part of May Month Remembrance. A petition to the International Criminal Court urging an investigation was also circulated, and signatures were obtained.
The month of May marks the remembrance of the Tamil genocide carried out by the Sri-Lankan Government. In May 2009, tens of thousands of innocent Tamils were targeted and brutally massacred. Many others were forcibly displaced into overcrowded detention centers, which were run more like concentrations camps that failed to provide basic necessities of life. During this month, Tamils around the world mark this month as a month of remembrance, and seek to educate others of the tragedy that occurred.
