It has been one year since the murder of Kristian Thanapalan, the York University student beaten to death with baseball and cricket bats.

And for his heartbroken family, still no justice.

Thanapalan was killed just after midnight in Glamorgan Park, near Kennedy Rd. and Hwy. 401, last summer.

Earlier in the evening, the 22-year-old and his five friends were playing volleyball. Another group of about 25 men appeared to be playing cricket.

At some point, words were exchanged.

A fight later broke out and Thanapalan was swarmed and beaten to death.

“A ruthless gang of personalities surrounded you and, without any regard for your plea, took you away from us in a matter of minutes,” said an open letter to Thanapalan from his family.

“That day, July 11th, will be etched in our hearts forever.”

Police have yet to charge anyone with the crime.

“Your vivacious personality was the daily pleasantry for your beloved Mother,” said the letter. “She has been lifeless, staring at the doorstep for your footsteps.”

Family and friends will gather for a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Sunday at Glamorgan Park.

Thanapalan was the 28th homicide of 2009. The anniversary of his death comes just one day after a man was shot and killed in Chinatown, the 28th homicide of 2010.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
