Effective Networking Communication Tips

  1. Maintain eye contact, and look genuinely interested in what the other person is saying. (This means actively listening)
  2. Do no cut people off while they are talking, let them COMPLETELY finish what they are saying before commenting
  3. Take the initiative to approach people and introduce yourself
  4. Look approachable, this means seeming friendly, and open body language (avoid crossing your arms)
  5. When you are talking to people, it is often a good idea to reiterate what they are saying back to them, it shows you are listening to what they are saying, and avoids any miscommunication
  6. Don’t overwhelm people with too much information, but provide them with key information, and something that makes you stand out from the crowd – this will ensure they remember you
  7. Follow-up with any contacts you hope to keep after the interaction (preferably within two days). This is why you should have mentioned something that makes you stand out;  people may have met many people during a event, and something that makes you stand out will trigger people’s memory.
  8. Stay positive and smile : )
