- Maintain eye contact, and look genuinely interested in what the other person is saying. (This means actively listening)
- Do no cut people off while they are talking, let them COMPLETELY finish what they are saying before commenting
- Take the initiative to approach people and introduce yourself
- Look approachable, this means seeming friendly, and open body language (avoid crossing your arms)
- When you are talking to people, it is often a good idea to reiterate what they are saying back to them, it shows you are listening to what they are saying, and avoids any miscommunication
- Don’t overwhelm people with too much information, but provide them with key information, and something that makes you stand out from the crowd – this will ensure they remember you
- Follow-up with any contacts you hope to keep after the interaction (preferably within two days). This is why you should have mentioned something that makes you stand out; people may have met many people during a event, and something that makes you stand out will trigger people’s memory.
- Stay positive and smile : )
