A Flash from the past – 2009 Soccer

Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance (CTYA) successfully held its first ever Tamileelam Challenge Cup Soccer Tournament on Sunday, September 6, 2010 at L’Amoreaux Sports Complex. The event was coordinated by CTYA with full support from its members, who acknowledged the importance of such an event from the very beginning and assisted in all the phases of the event.

This event brought together 35 soccer teams, hundreds of soccer fans, sponsors, and members from the non-Tamil community, all of whom shared a common interest.

Soccer tournaments were held for soccer teams in the age groups under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16, and for open men. This year we are introducing further age groups which include under 6 and under 18 to further encourage the youth. The commitment that the young Tamils had for the soccer sport was revealed in the intense competition that took place between all the competing teams.

Tamileelam Challenge Cup trophies for Most Valuable Player, Best Defence and Best Goalie in each age group were named after the national symbols of Tamileelam, to honour the Tamileelam symbols and keep them fresh in the minds of the younger generation.

The Most Valuable Player trophy was named after the Tamileelam national animal, the Siruthai. The Best Defence Trophy was named after the Tamileelam national bird, the Chenpagam, and the Best Goalie Trophy was named after the Tamileelam national tree, the Vaahai.
