Article 4. : No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. Slavery. For many people, when they hear the word slavery, the first thing that comes to mind is the Black slaves of America, Harriet Tubman, and the Civil Rights Movement. Many people also think that slavery has been abolished and is no longer in existence in the world. This could not be further from the truth, sadly, slavery is alive and well, and has changed forms. Sexual slavery is a form of slavery that has become widespread in many developing nations. The trafficking of women and children, and forced prostitution is growing. |

On this Day: May 4, 2009: Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) Colombo Head Office Secretary, Ms. Chandra Ellawela, has instructed Jaffna office not to admit anyone seeking protection to their lives into the office but to get the assistance of the police to check them and not to take them to Court in HRC vehicles but in private vehicles, civil society sources in Jaffna said. |

Today, we will be looking at Article 3, The Right to Life. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security – but clearly the lives, liberty and security of the thousands of Tamils in Vanni were not protected. Life is something that one human has no right to take away from another human; in fact, many countries have passed laws that punish unsuccessful suicide, because they believe that not even an individual has the right to take away their life. However, in Sri-Lanka, it has been the state that has been the perpetrator of genocide, causing thousands of victims their lives. |

Children faint from hunger, starvation deaths reported in Vanni: Health officials in Vanni report that several children faint from hunger within the so-called safety zone every day. Deliberate denial of food by Colombo, especially milk powder for children, have caused severe malnutrition and starvation as local media reported at least 9 starvation deaths in recent days |

On this Day: May 2, 2009: Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on Saturday attacked the only remaining makeshift hospital twice, killing 64 patients and attending relatives, and causing injuries to 87. Two artillery shells fired by the SLA hit the hospital at Mu’l’li-vaaykkaal around 9:00 a.m. killing 23 and maiming 34 and later several shells were fired at 10:30 a.m., killing 41 and maiming 53. The attack has taken place, after the Sri Lankan military was provided with the exact coordinates of the hospital premises three days back through the ICRC, and as Sri Lanka Air Force Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was monitoring the hospital area. The massacre is calculated to coerce the civilians said a rescue worker citing leaflets air dropped Friday with Mahinda Rajapaksa’s message asking civilians to come to the SLA side. |

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a document drafted by representatives of different political, legal and cultural backgrounds around the world, which outlines the standard of human rights. It outlines the 30 most fundamental human rights, which are to be universally protected, and applicable to every individual on the simple premise of being human. As stated in the previous post, Remembering May Massacre, for the next 30 days we will be looking at each of the 30 fundamental human rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and will see how each and every human right was not upheld for the Tamils. Today, we will be looking at Article 1. We are all born free and equal. |

The month of May marks the first year remembrance of the Tamil genocide carried out by the Sri-Lankan Government. During this time last year, thousands of innocent Tamils were targeted and brutally massacred. Many others were forcibly displaced into overcrowded detention centers, detention centers that were run more like concentrations camps that failed to provide basic necessities of life. |

Sometimes when we think of massacres and genocides, we think to ourselves, how did people let them get into power, how could we have not seen it coming? But the truth is, these people who facilitated genocides and massacres did not hide behind the bushes with their ideologies, they publically stated them, see for yourself what some of the monsters of recent civilization have said. |
