Rathika Sitsabaiesan, a 29-year old Tamil youth was elected to Canadian Federal Parliament as a Member of Parliament this past Monday. Her achievement marks the first female and Tamil member who has been elected to Canadian Federal Government.

Cancer is an illness that has impacted every individual either directly or indirectly in some way. We have known people who have fought against cancer, and also those who were unable to beat this deadly disease. The Canadian Cancer Society has been holding a campaign throughout April to encourage Canadians to wear a daffodil pin to show their support for those who are fighting against cancer, those who have survived and to remember those have lost their lives. April 27th is Daffodil Day.

Over the years, the Tamil community has been contributing economically, socially and culturally to the greater Canadian society. As an aspiring community, the Tamil youth need a place to come together and practice their traditions and values and preserve their identity. Therefore the members of CTYA feel that a recreation centre for the youth is necessary, and are proud to initiate the first step towards a community center through “Thaalam”.
