With the wedding season in full swing, the next natural thing for couples to bicker about is what colors to choose to decorate the new place they are about to move into and call home. She may want pink undertones, and he may want to lean towards dark grays. She may want soft bean bags to be comfortable in, while he is all about Lazy-boy dark leather recliners. Short of untying the knot he just tied, there is a way to compromise on colors and decor between genders so that both are equally happy with the choices made. |

Thulirkal, Nayani ThiyagarajahBy Editor - April 30th, 2015 |
Between those experiences, I decided with my team on a short film regarding shadeism, which is also known as colourism, a word by Alice Walker. It basically describes the preference for lighter skin as discrimination based on skin tones in communities of colour. I got together with a few of my friends having a conversation and also my niece, which was all filmed and they all also helped me put everything together. As everyone usually uploads videos on Facebook, I did the same not expecting the turnout, it spread like wild fire through Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and other social media platforms. That’s where we got support to do a future film for the past 5 years, which we just finished this January. |

Thangachi’s Corner: Body ImageBy Editor - April 27th, 2015 |
That’s what left me flabbergasted in the middle of a Phys-Ed class, staring at a wide-eyed six-year old as basketballs bounced around us. It took me about three seconds to recover—I felt my response would momentarily shape this child’s perception of body image, and I wasn’t going to let an opportunity like that pass by without making a change worthwhile: “Skinny?” I responded. “Forget about being skinny! What’s really important is being strong and healthy and happy. That’s what we should care more about, don’t you think? That’s why we do exercise and play games in Phys-Ed—to make our hearts strong and healthy. You’re beautiful just the way you are!” |
