Don’t like our coffee? Take your business elsewhere, Excerpts
That’s Tim Hortons’ advice a day after the story of a New Brunswick man getting slapped with a lifetime ban for complaining about “bad coffee” went viral and elicited hundreds of comments online.
Jimmy Craig of St. Andrews, a tiny community about 90 kilometres west of Saint John, was banned from two stores on Jan. 22 because he complained a half-dozen times about his decaffeinated coffee tasting burnt.
“The last time I had coffee (at the St. Andrews outlet), I almost got sick,” a miffed Craig told the Star Monday. “All I did was point out a problem with the consistency of the product. It’s no way to treat a customer.”
The coffee giant likes to keep its customers happy, said David Morelli, spokesman for Tim Hortons. In this case, Morelli said Craig had complained multiple times and “no matter what the staff did to make it right, he was unhappy,” said Morelli, adding Craig was also becoming aggressive with the store staff.
“At some point, we have to respectfully agree to disagree, and suggest we go our separate ways.”
Craig, who mostly ordered decaffeinated coffee, said it frequently tasted burnt. One day some months ago, he got five “awful” coffees in a row. “The manager apologized and gave me free coffees.” For weeks after that, there was no problem with his coffee.
Within a few days, the St. Andrews store owner, Edwin Dow, contacted Craig and the two met. Craig says that’s when Dow served him with a letter banning him under the province’s Trespass Act.
He was also banned from the Tim Hortons in St. Stephen, a neighbouring community. Dow owns both stores and was not available for comment Monday.
