Applying for Awards
CTYA’s Top Talents Awards Gala and Dinner in June 2010 awarded individuals who exemplified extraordinary talent and accomplishment in various fields with awards and $500 Rewards each. CTYA will be hosting another Top Talents Awards Gala and Dinner in 2011 where we will be honouring and awarding outstanding students once again.
Tips on filling out scholarship and bursary applications (If you are planning to apply to CTYA’s 2011 Top Talents Awards Gala, do read this carefully!):
- Read the guidelines carefully and ensure that you meet the complete criteria for applying.
- PROOFREAD. Spelling and grammar mistakes show that you have not invested much time in editing your work. Get your friends and family to read over your application to catch any mistakes you may have missed.
- Be specific. The reader does not know you, although those who you work with may know a great deal about you, your reader does not. Your job is to be specific and tell the reader everything important they need to know. For example, it is not enough to say that you have leadership qualities; you need to show examples of where you exhibited these qualities.
- Get your application in before the deadline.
- Choose references that will be able to give you the best reference letter, it is about the quality of the reference letter, not the quantity of reference letters you include. Often times people assume getting a 2-line reference letter from a principal is more beneficial than a detailed account of your accomplishments by a teacher, however, often times it is not. Make sure you give your references adequate time to prepare you a good letter.
- Spend a lot of time on your personal statement. We do read everything you submit, and your personal statements do hold a great deal of weight. You need to show why you are the best candidate for the award.
- Do not pad your application with irrelevant or false facts.
- Focus on what you have already accomplished, and highlight these achievements.
- Have fun with your application, this is your time to shine and reflect on all you have done. Be proud of yourself!
