A Picture is Worth 1000 Words

Painted By: Keethi Karunakaran

To  me, art isn’t just taking a paintbrush and splatting paint on the canvas, or just jumping around when listening to music. To  me, dance is a form of way that my feet speak to music. I paint/draw and dance my feelings. That is how i express my feelings out to the world. I illustrate issues because Aristotle once said “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” and Napoleon Bonaparte once said “A picture is worth a thousand words.” I believe that my paintings are worth a thousand words.

Anguish
Title: “Anguish”
Medium: Oil paint and pastel, Watercolour paint, Acrylic paint, Markers on canvas.
Artist Statement: This painting was one of one my school assignments. I was told to choose any political issue and illustrate it and, also explain to the class why I’ve chose this topic and how I chose to paint it. I chose to illustrate the 2009 May Massacre of the Tamils. This has not only affected those that are there but us who live here in Canada. Those who were caught in the genocide were killed heartlessly. Without even thinking about what they had done, they had still killed those newborns. Those who had still had many more to live for, were gone. Family, friends and neighbours were stolen, their homes were stolen, and their entire lives and futures were stolen.
HiddenBeauty
Title: “Hidden Beauty”
Medium: Oil and Acrylic paint on board mat
Artist Statement: This painting was inspired by the absolute wonderful movie “Life of Pi” when i noticed how powerful and intelligent this beautiful creature is and what they are capable of doing, as an individual. Also, The tiger is one of my favourite animals because they symbolize power. They prowl throughout the night but yet they reflect an endangered creature waiting to be captured by hunters.
DEvotion
