A Nightmare Come True: Remembering May Massacre

The month of May marks the second year remembrance of the Tamil genocide carried out by the Sri-Lankan Government. During this time in 2009, genocidal acts by Sri Lankan government escalated, leaving 40,000 killed according to UN and over 120,000 killed according to the local sources.

Despite the international mobilization by the Tamil Diaspora, who protested against the atrocities and called for an international intervention, no such intervention occurred. Tamil civilians were consequently subject to countless crimes against humanity inflicted by the Sri-Lankan Government. With mounting evidence documenting the genocide, we now urge the international community to take action against the perpetrators and prevent further acts of genocide.

CTYA joins with our members, friends, families, in commemorating the lost lives.  We remember our relatives, friends, and brethren who were ruthlessly killed during May 2009. We urge our members to continue to share their personal stories with friends, co-workers, and to the international community.

As a community, this is our time to remember the victims and heal together in unity. By sharing our stories, and educating our peers, we offer a voice to those many victims who were left voiceless.

In Solidarity,

Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance
