Thaalam 2012: Recreation and Innovation Center Initiation!

Over the years, the Tamil community has been contributing economically, socially and culturally to the greater Canadian society. As an aspiring community, the Tamil youth need a place to come together and practice their traditions and values and preserve their identity. Therefore the members of CTYA feel that a Recreation and Innovation Center for the youth is necessary, and are proud to initiate the first step towards a youth recreation center through “Thaalam” funds.

Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance has already begun the programming for the Recreation and Innovation Center. Using this programming, we hope to reach to the next level in securing a temporary space which can later be moved to a permanent space once adequate funds are reached.

The programs we are currently running are:
– Power of the Pen
-Poetry Slams, Book releases
– Robotics Programs
-Robotics Competition, Robotics Workshops
– Young Entrepreneurs Network
-Workshops and Seminars for Startup businesses
– Step Up
-Programs to encourage women in sports
– Film Arts Network
-Encouraging youth in film arts

Having a recreational space will help the youth come together to a central location to develop themselves and gain valuable knowledge and skills. It will also allow for the tools, resources to be readily available for use by the youth.

Within the temporary space, we are aiming to have a gymnasium, a research library, a rotating Museum, a film/music studio and a conference room. Through each of these facilities, we aim to develop Tamil youth to become strong, empowered leaders in their respective fields.

Although we have initiated this project, this is a community project, and the full support and commitment of all community members is necessary in order for it to flourish. This is a project initiated by youth for the youth, and the encouragement and support from the broader Tamil community is important in ensuring the success of this project.
