Pierre Elliot Trudeau 1919-2000

Until the young Justice Minister Trudeau’s Criminal Law Amendment Act 1968-1969 was passed laws in Canada against homosexuality had been draconian, attaitudes harsh and homosexuality almost invisible.  Despite his having been, brought up a Roman Catholic, he believed that religion and politics should be kept separate and his legislation also relaxed divorce laws and included the legalization of abortion, contraception and lotteries.  Although he was unpopular with the conservative members of the Liberal Part, the public, especially younger people, found him inspirational and he was elected leader of the party in April 1968, becoming -at the age of 48- Prime Minister two weeks later.

“There’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.  What’s done in private between adults doesn’t concern the Criminal Code.”
