Resume Writing Quick Tips

TIPS FOR RESUME WRITING

  • Make sure you read over your resume and check for spelling and grammar mistakes! This is very important, if you take the time to read over your resume and make sure it is error-free, it shows the employer that you are genuinely interested. THIS IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE, AND DON’T BE ONE OF THEM! Read it over a few times, and get friends and family to look it over and catch mistakes you may have overlooked.
  • Keep your resume to one page; the average employer spends very little time actually reading through your entire resume, so keep it short and sweet. 1-2 pages MAX.
  • KEYWORDS of your skills are VERY important!! Some employers only scan your resume and look for key words and skills. It is important you make sure you include these key skills throughout your resume. (When employers post an opening, they often list qualifications and skills you should posses, it would be wise to include these in your resume.)
  • Always tailor your resume for every specific company you apply too – yes it make take an extra 10 minutes, but it helps if you match your skills with the one your employer is looking for.
  • TYPE YOUR RESUME, make sure the margins are even and that you use ONE consistent font.
  • It is very important to send a COVER LETTER with your resume. It is not an option; you MUST send a cover letter with your resume.
  • Provide your references with copies of your references so that they can highlight your contributions and qualifications. Some of them act as references for many people, but if they have a copy of your resume, they can better speak of you.
  • Don’t just list your previous employer and job title. Highlight what your main tasks were, and highlight your accomplishments. à But keep it short and get to the point ( 1 or 2 bullet points)
  • If 100 people are applying for the job, why should they hire you? You to tell them why you would be the best candidate.
  • Include relevant work experience.
  • Use plain, white legal size paper. (Quality depending on the job your applying for) And, don’t fold your resume.
  • Don’t over pad your resume, but don’t self your self short either.

Good Luck =)
