Tamil Rights Conference- Saturday, March 26th, 2011
12- 3 PM
With evidence mounting against the Sri Lankan government, it is vital to urge the international community to stand together in prosecuting the individuals responsible for the injustice inflicted on the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. This conference looks to contribute to the growing chorus of international opposition to Sri Lanka’s human rights record and to bolster support for the aspirations of the Tamil people: Recognition of the Tamil homeland, Recognition of Tamils as a nation, and the Recognition of the right to self-determination of the Tamils, a right enshrined in the United Nations.

ANTON BALASINGHAM FREEDOM Scholarship- $250

UTSC TSA will be offering a scholarship to an individual who is best able to expressively depict a community’s right to self-determination. Submissions are expected to be purely expressive. Expressive writing is personal writing. It expresses and explores the personal feelings of the writer. The piece may attempt to answer a question, state an opinion or recount the writer’s personal experiences. Many times, expressive writing does all of these. Unlike most forms of writing, this type of written communication isn’t focused on proper spelling, punctuation and grammar, therefore submissions will be evaluated purely on how well the individual expresses their thoughts on a community’s right to self-determination. Deadline for submissions: Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011.
